WCAG-Compliant Design System and Accessibility-First Component Library
Making product components reusable, accessible, and easier for teams to ship consistently
Introduction
01
The client is the leading grocery-technology platform in North America, with a consumer surface that has to work across an unusually diverse customer base — different ages, different abilities, different devices, different cultural contexts.
Problem
02
Accessibility in a consumer marketplace is not a feature — it is the underlying compliance and usability discipline that determines whether the platform is usable by everyone the brand says it serves. The cost of retrofitting accessibility into a mature consumer product is greater than the cost of designing the components correctly the first time, but the platform had to absorb the audit and update work without disrupting the existing surfaces.
Solution
03
Taller audited and updated the grocery technology platform's components to meet WCAG standards, developed the scalable component library with documentation, and ran the usability testing that validates each component against WCAG criteria. The Figma component library is the visible artifact, but the durable work is the documentation that describes each component's behavior across the WCAG dimensions — keyboard navigation, screen-reader semantics, color-contrast ratios, focus-state visibility, motion-sensitivity controls — and the audit methodology that lets the design system absorb new components without losing the discipline. The animation work in Lottie Files and After Effects is the second layer of accessibility consideration, because motion in a consumer product affects users with vestibular sensitivity in ways that static designs do not.
Impact
04
Taller delivered the WCAG-compliant design system, an accessibility-first component library ready for implementation across the platform, and improved accessibility for inclusive UX.
Significance
05
Accessibility as a design-system discipline rather than as a compliance checklist is the operational property that lets a consumer marketplace serve its full addressable customer base. For the grocery technology platform's positioning as the leading grocery-tech platform, this is the discipline that converts inclusivity from a marketing claim into a structural property of the product.
